Stephen Robin was born in Brooklyn, NY with a natural instinct for building things. As a child he had an A.C. Gilbert erector set; at 12 he built his first workbench. After earning a degree in Mechanical Technology and working as a metal fabricator in Queens, he made his way to Woodstock, NY in 1965. He put a sign out in his yard, started developing a clientele, and never looked back.
By the time he was 28, Robin had visited furniture maker Wendell Castle, bought the tools, and was building gallery-quality art furniture of his own. He showed work at museums, taught at community colleges, and became a representative for the American Craft Council for New York, where he met George Nakashima and Sam Maloof, two of the towering figures of American craft. He has been in business continuously since 1967.
In 1983, Robin and his partner Joany Elliott bought four acres a mile from downtown Woodstock, built their dream home, and constructed an adjacent workshop that grew into one of the most capable custom woodworking facilities in the Hudson Valley. The shop runs approximately 3,800 square feet across two working floors, houses an extensive collection of hand tools, and is anchored by a large-format CNC router from C.R. Onsrud, purchased in 2007 with a grant from the U.S. Forest Service. The shop has been featured on the front page of Woodshop News.
Now 87, Stephen Robin brings the same passion and exacting standards to every project that he brought to his first commission more than 60 years ago. His capabilities span custom kitchens and cabinetry, fine furniture of every description, built-in libraries and shelving, decorative millwork, staircases, architectural woodwork, and CNC fabrication for other shops throughout the region. He is also a certified dealer and installer of Dutch Made Custom Cabinetry.
Stephen's work is on permanent view at the Robin Elliott Gallery at 2488 Route 212 in Woodstock, and at Flying Fish restaurant and gallery in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. He works alongside a co-op team of skilled craftspeople, each running their own business from the Woodstock shop, each sharing Stephen's commitment to exceptional work.
